Did You Have a Life-Changing Event? You May Be Able to Appeal

IRMAA is based on your tax return from 2 years ago. If your income has gone down significantly since then due to certain life-changing events, you may be able to ask the Social Security Administration to use your more recent income instead — which could reduce or eliminate your IRMAA surcharge.

    Qualifying life-changing events include:

    • Retirement or reduction in work hours
    • Death of a spouse
    • Loss or reduction of pension income
    • Marriage, divorce, or annulment
    • Loss of income-producing property
    • Employer settlement payment

    How to appeal:

To request a reduction, you'll need to complete Form SSA-44 ("Medicare Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount – Life-Changing Event") and submit it to your local Social Security office along with documentation supporting your life-changing event.

You can download Form SSA-44 directly from the Social Security Administration website at ssa.gov/forms/ssa-44.pdf.

Not sure if your situation qualifies?

This is something I can help you think through. Even though IRMAA appeals are filed directly with Social Security (not through an insurance agent), I'm happy to talk through whether your circumstances might qualify and what documentation you'll need. Just book a free consultation below.
